POSITION:

DIRECTOR OF FOOD SERVICES

JOB GOAL:

Under the direction of the School Business Administrator, the Director of Food Services is responsible for the operation of the school breakfast, lunch, after school snack, fresh fruit and vegetable, dinner, and summer programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nutrition or Culinary Arts, or an Associate’s degree with a major in Nutrition or Culinary Arts and at least 5 years of experience in Public School Food Service.
  2. At least 8 hours of food safety training within five years.
  3. Ability to successfully administer all aspects of the district food service program
  4. Experience in supervision of personnel.
  5. Should have or be willing to complete or continue education relevant to performing job responsibilities prescribed for Director of Food Services.
  6. Ability to perform effectively in oral and written communication at all levels and in all matters related to the district organization and food services.
  7. Serve Safe Certified 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To supervise the preparation and serving of all school menus, special
    dinners and all special meals required at school and district events.
  2. To maintain effective communication with parents, students and the
    community.
  3. To assess and prioritize the needs of the students to promote and increase sales.
  4. To give suitable assignments, instructions and supervision to Assistant
    Director of Food Service, Bookkeeper, Secretary and District Nutritionist.
  5. To ensure the accuracy and maintenance of the point of sale system including
    updating system menus, passwords, parental notifications, and program
    participation reporting.
  6. To supervise and maintain records and files related to food preparation and service, costs, inventories, personnel and other records.
  7. To maintain cafeteria accounting procedures in accordance with district standards and state/federal regulations; and coordinates the audit of cafeteria accounts with the Board’s auditor.
  8. To conduct the required annual survey to determine eligibility for free and reduced
    price meals or free milk; verifies applications.
  9. To make application for government surplus food and commodities for school
    cafeteria use and to direct its distribution and transfer.
  10. To administer personnel policies for cafeteria personnel in order to recommend assignment, promotion and dismissals of personnel in order to assure efficient and economical operations; observes and evaluates the performance of all food services personnel.
  11. To assist with payroll for the food services program.
  12. To supervise and maintain necessary records regarding the free and reduced lunch
    programs, after school snack program and dinner program.
  13. To participate in the interviewing and screening of food service personnel.
  14. To coordinate training and other in-service activities to enhance the program.
  15. To make quality assurance visits to feeding sites and analyze participation trends.
  16. To inspect school lunch facilities and operations to ensure that standards of diet, cleanliness, health and safety are being maintained, and observing and making recommendations for improvement in operations.
  17. To administer the departmental budget.
  18. To review and evaluate all requests and recommendations for purchase of new and replacement equipment.
  19. To assist in the preparation of specifications and bid conditions for all items
    requiring such bids by law or Board policy.
  20. To meet with vendors, suppliers and salespeople as necessary.
  21. To assist in the development of policy relevant to the Food Services Program.
  22. To cooperate with Principals and District Administrators to facilitate a smooth operation of the Food Services Program.
  23. To cooperate with school nurses, custodians, Department of Health and other health officials as required.
  24. Evaluates the food services program; keeps the administration and the board informed of the food services operation and makes recommendations for changes in programs, procedures, facilities and equipment that would improve quality and efficiency.
  25. To perform such other duties as assigned by the School Business Administrator or his designee.
  26. Obtain 12 hours of annual continuing education/training and maintain Serve Safe Certification.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

12-Month position. Salary determined by the Bridgeton Board of Education

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policies and procedures on the evaluation of professional staff.
