QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Student Assistance Coordinator Certificate;
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of effective teaching methods and developmentally appropriate activities;
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; and
  4. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

JOB GOAL:

A Student Assistance Coordinator in the Bridgeton School District is an educator who will apply their extensive knowledge in substance abuse counseling for the betterment of the school district. This educator will assist students through research-based, effective substance abuse counseling practices for the purpose of developing successful students. The Substance Awareness Coordinator will keep abreast of current trends and data as it relates to substance abuse counseling and share these experiences and knowledge as a resource for staff and students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Act as a resource person, giving demonstrations, training, and/or sharing articles and materials with staff and/or administration, for substance abuse counseling;
  2. Work in conjunction with the Director of Student Services and school Principals to implement, coordinate, schedule, and conduct substance abuse counseling to students;
  3. Act as a liaison between the school and other state, community, and private agencies providing services to students and families;
  4. Assist in the implementation of character education throughout the school district;
  5. Seek and assist in the application process for alternative funding sources;
  6. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that meet the needs of each pupil using individual and group settings;
  7. Maintain on-going contact with parents through conferences (and other means) to inform them of the school program and to discuss pupil progress;
  8. Make effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program;
  9. Participate in faculty meetings and serve on school and district committees as requested by administration;
  10. Meet with teachers and other staff to familiarize them with the services and operations of the program;
  11. Facilitate the reduction of discriminatory bias by promoting respect for human differences;
  12. Instruct students on classroom etiquette and develops an awareness of socially acceptable behavior;
  13. Read journals and articles, attend conferences, enroll in professional memberships, provide demonstrations and workshops, and network with others in the field to keep abreast of trends and significant developments in substance abuse counseling and character education;
  14. Assist in long-range planning for substance abuse counseling in unison with the K-12 Guidance Curriculum and K-12 Substance Abuse Education Curriculum;
  15. Assist in the planning and development of the K-12 Substance Abuse Education Curriculum and K-12 Guidance Curriculum;
  16. Meet regularly with the Director of Student Services and ongoing committees to articulate and address the needs of the students and the school district;
  17. Prepare requisitions for the ordering of materials, software or supplies, where appropriate, check orders as they arrive, correct shipping errors and maintain records;
  18. Give proper attention to the care and protection of school property and uses materials economically;
  19. Maintain cordial and workable professional and social relationships with other members of the professional and non-professional staff;
  20. Adhere to and promote the vision, mission, philosophy, and objectives of the district, the administrative staff and the Board of Education, and interpret the policies and programs of the school in a positive and constructive manner;
  21. Manage drug and alcohol screenings of students/staff;
  22. Provide the Director of Student Services and the Principal with monthly reports of their activities; and
  23. Perform other duties, as required by the Director of Student Services and school Principals.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten (10) Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with state law and the provisions of the Board of Education's Policy.
